3 to Begin Congestion Management
Mobile broadband provider 3 is taking active steps to tackle the issue of heavy congestion in networks. The move comes after fears that growing usage levels may seriously affect the quality of internet service in the near future.
3 has announced that it will be putting in place some network management systems to handle this problem. Therefore, customers who want to access heavy load applications like video streaming and peer-to-peer sharing will no longer hog the speed leaving others browsing the internet with slow speeds. The provider calls the step a means by which all customers will be ensured equality in usage of its service.
Those who want to use heavy applications will be routed to slower service levels so that everyone has a consistently decent experience while surfing.
These initiatives are being mooted because of the rapid increase in the number of mobile broadband users globally, with mobile data traffic expected to go up 25-fold by 2012. With the advent and subsequent popularity of smartphones with 3G access, mobile broadband use is expected to go up, making industry experts fear that technological advancements in the industry may not be able to keep pace with the demand.
Given these predictions, providers everywhere are trying to come up with means of tackling usage spurts to ensure they are still keeping customers happy. 3 says only high usage areas will be managed in this manner, so that only a few customers will actually face slow connections and that too during peak hours.
