The Merits of Ethanol Fuel

Posted @ 4:28 pm

1. Crude oil from which gasoline is produced is fast getting depleted and nations are bracing themselves for facing this situation by looking for alternative sources for their fuel needs. Renewable fuels can be the answer to this predicament and one such renewable fuel is ethanol. Since it is produced from crops that are grown every year, there is likely to be a perennial supply of ethanol fuel.
2. Pollution and greenhouse gas emissions are two other concerns that are leading nations to rethink their strategy on fuels. It has been found that ethanol fuels cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 46%. 10% ethanol content in fuel tanks can also bring down greenhouse gas emissions by 19%. Further, the availability of more oxygen in ethanol makes it burn better than gasoline, thus contributing more to the protection of the environment.
3. It is the chemical nature of ethanol that makes it separate while in contact with water, which precludes water pollution. Its biodegradability is also a boon to ground water supplies.
4. Ethanol production is less pricey than gasoline. Using ethanol fuel leads to automatic savings as well.
5. Ethanol fits in well with existing technologies and current vehicle designs. The present distribution infrastructure can be used for making ethanol available on a wider scale, too. A blend of ethanol and gasoline is also safe for all vehicles.
6. Since crops are the basic ingredients for producing ethanol, you support farmers economically if you use ethanol fuel. Unlike in the case of gasoline that makes multinationals richer, the use of ethanol redounds to the benefit of the nation.
7. To foot the import bill of large quantities of crude oil every year, foreign exchange reserves are used by almost every nation but this can be averted if a shift is made to the use of ethanol as the main fuel. This reduction in our dependence on imported oil lessens the influence of oil-exporting countries on as well as strengthens our national economy.
8. Though only corn and sugar cane are the current base materials for ethanol manufacturing, researchers are making headway into discovering new and ubiquitous source materials, including waste matter. Such a scenario will definitely impact hugely and in a much more sweeping way our future fuel use.
